Arethusa was the favourite nymph of Artemis and lived in the woods near Pisa in the region of Elis . Alphaios the river-god fell desperately in love with her after seeing her bathing naked in the river. Arethusa was forced to flee from the love-struck river-god to the island of Ortygia , where Artemis came to her assistance by transforming her into a fountain. But Alphaios love for her was so great, that he transformed himself into a river, so he could unite with the nymph pouring through the fountain...
